My Club Activity~

 Hello, everyone~ :-)
It is getting colder day by day.

calligraphy
In this post, I would like to tell you about my club activity. I belong to the calligraphy club. I love calligraphy. I think one's heart is expressed by the handwriting. In Japan, It is virtue that’s write a good character. We say so important to write correctly thinking about others the feelings. If I write good character, I will be praised by people. Also, the thought will be conveyed to them. I think that it’s so glad thing. In this simple reason, I started calligraphy. From elementary school, there was a class to imitate textbook. Is it also in the USA? Is not important to write legibly in USA?

A little, I would like to talk about the activities. The calligraphy club is doing on every Tuesdays. I'm practice on the model of textbooks. And I use mainly a pen. The semi cursive style is very difficult. At the beginning of October, there was a school festival at the University of Shimane. We set up a calligraphy experience corner. There were visited many people. Calligraphy is fun!

Many people handwriting are better than I am. I think that I want to be well. In recent years, IT technology is developing. We begin to use e-mail. So, handwriting got become fewer. PC is very useful indeed. But, I want to remember handwriting's true value. Umm… a letter, a character, handwriting, write...Which is the suitable? This word be expressed in English is difficult. :’-(

Thank you for reading my post till the end!

  1. Hi Yumi,
Calligraphy sounds very interesting! I know that kanji writing in Japan is not only part of your communication, but it is also a form of art. It is really cool that you enjoy calligraphy, for over here in America, calligraphy is not nearly as popular as it is in Japan.
What is your favorite kanji character to draw using calligraphy? There are many cool looking characters in the Japanese dictionary, so I'm sure you enjoy writing many different ones.
In America, although it is nice to read beautiful handwriting, it is not as praised as it is in Japan. Many people in the U.S. especially doctors, care more about what they write rather than how it looks. Japanese writing is much more elegant.

    1. Hello, Tyler. :-)
I'm glad to hear these. I think that cursive style in English is cool.
My favorite kanji character is 愛. It mean of love in English. "心(heart)" plus "受(catch)" is "愛(love)". I might be a little sentimental. But, I think there is a deeper meaning in it. Also my favorite kanji character is 祐. It is use into my name. This is hard to translate into English. Please look it up in the Japanese dictionary. :-)
I see. The contents are important. I think I have understood. Thank you for letting me know!

  2. Hi Yumi,
That's so cool that you have a calligraphy club at your school and that you enjoy doing it. I tried Chinese calligraphy a few times in middle school, it's so hard! But you are right, the more beautiful your handwriting, the better.

Anyways, I'm thinking about the word you are looking for... could it be penmanship? I know that a person's penmanship says something about who they are as a person. Here in the United States you can get a degree in Graphology where you can learn to predict someone's personality based on their handwriting. Or use handwriting samples to solve crimes and things like that. Maybe there is something similar for Japanese?

    1. Hello, Quyen. :-)

I’m so glad! I struggle with calligraphy. I wanted to see your works.
I didn't know that there was such a degree. So, I investigated with PC. I found a profession of handwriting expert. It seems that surely Japan also has it. You are wise.
Thank you for thinking the word I'm looking for. :-D
Really, character, letter, write, handwriting ... Each nuance is different, I was difficult to understand. But, it was not a big problem. Maybe, I think that I was able to get through to you. I'm relieved. Thank you very much!
