Fun day!

Hello. : )
In this post, I would like to tell you about my family tradition.
I celebrate the New Year with my family. New Year's Day is a special day for us. I eat dishes with them. People eat special dishes called Osechi and rice cake soup called Ozoni.
Osechi
First, Osechi is specially-prepared New Year's dishes to be eaten during the first three days of January. Each of the dishes has some auspicious meaning which reflects people's wishes. For example, Kazunoko, herring roe, represents fertility, Kuromame, cooked black beans, are for health (Mame means healthy), and lobsters are for longevity because their bodies are bent like an old man's. I like Kuromame( black beans) and Kurikinton(mashed sweet potatoes with sweetened chestnuts). They are very sweet and delicious! : )
This is the Ozoni of Shimane.
A little different for me.
Next, I would like to introduce Ozoni. The present head of the family makes Ozoni. Currently, grandfather is doing. In Ozoni, rice cake, napa cabbage, and boiled fish paste are contained. This differs in contents by the region or a home. For example, the form of rice cake and seasoning is different. I think strange and interesting. In the United States, are there any special dishes to eat in New Year? What is it like?  I seldom make a special thing with family. I think I wanted a family tradition now.
Thank you for reading to the end!

  1. Hi Yumi, my name is Dylan. I've seen Osechi before, but I've never had the chance to try it. It sounds very delicious! However, I have eaten ozoni before at a family gathering. I don't know if there is a particular food that is made on New Year's in the United States.
